LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a system which defines and measures green buildings. It is designed for rating new and existing buildings. LEED evaluates environmental performance from a whole building perspective over a building’s life cycle, providing a definitive standard for what constitutes a green building. LEED is based on accepted energy and environmental principles and strikes a balance between known effective practices and emerging concepts. Developed and managed by the US Green Building Council (USGBC), the LEED rating system is quickly becoming the most effective method for building owners and developers to respond to growing tenant requirements for more efficient healthy buildings.

The LEED Green Building Rating System encourages a holistic approach to the design process that recognizes the interdependent nature of a sustainable building. Since LEED evaluates environmental performance from the perspective of the entire building considered over its entire life cycle, incorporating input from the design team (architects, engineers, landscape architects, etc.), the community, and the client, becomes key to achieving a LEED rating and successful design.
